Established in 1980 (previously known as the Australian Communication Association), and recognised in 1994, ANZCA supports vital forums for communications research, acknowledges exceptional work in the field of communications, hosts annual conferences and produces two internationally renowned indexed journals. As an independent association, ANZCA delivers research that is increasingly important and impactful at a time when new media and communication technologies are shaping so much about how we communicate with each other.

About The Conference
THEME: Communication, Authority and Power
This year’s conference will consider how various forms, institutions and practices of communication both involve and are affected by mobilisations of authority and power. Communication has always been central to both the exercise of and struggles surrounding power and authority, and communication practices and practitioners are affected by and implicated in power relations. Fields and practices of communication have constituted vital domains through which authority and power are exercised and contested.

Professor Marcia Langton AO
Prof Dr Marcia Langton AO is a descendant of the Iman people of Queensland. She is an anthropologist and geographer, and since 2000 has held the Foundation Chair of Australian Indigenous Studies at the University of Melbourne, and is the Associate Provost. She has published in the fields of political and legal anthropology, Indigenous agreements and engagement with the minerals industry, and Indigenous culture and art. Marcia has contributed to policy development, and been a public intellectual and advocate for Aboriginal rights.

Natali Helberger is Distinguished University Professor Law and Digital Technologies, with a special focus on AI, and affiliated with the Institute for Information Law, one of the leading research centres on information law in Europe and worldwide. One of her main concerns over the past 5 years has been how digitization, algorithms and AI are transforming the media and its implications for public values, diversity in the media landscape and the media’s democratic role. She is currently leading a team of data scientists, journalism, communication and legal scholars to study the individual, societal and legal implications of algorithmic news recommendations. She is the founder and leader (together with Professor Claes de Vreese) of an interdisciplinary research programme “Information & Communication in the DataSociety (ICDS)” and one of the founders of the new Research Priority Area Human(e) AI. Professor Helberger is elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW).

His research focuses on the impact of emerging technologies on news production and consumption.
